Sisters.
Aileen was the nice type, and she had always been.
The kind of girl who went out of her way to lend a hand, and who was happy to stay in the background and receive no credit as long as her partners were happy.
She liked gossip, cute actors, singing and dancing, and she really liked red roses.
Alyssa was the not so nice twin. She had been like that since forever as well.
It’s not that she liked to hog the credit or anything, but she saw getting recognition of her work as something simply natural.
She liked reading, sports, and she was really obsessed with books about science advances in the times of war.
They were the perfect pair.
Their mother had died nine years before they entered the academy. She was a spy as well. Their father had died the same day, when he, after discovering his wife was a traitor to the country, tried to stop the military from killing her.
It was sad, yes, but both girls had learned to live with it.
If she had died, it was because she was bad at her work. Because she hadn’t though of measuring the risk of being a spy during war. That’s what they told each other as they found themselves going down the same road. They told each other that if the time to die came, they would die in the same way as their parents had.
Together.
They joined the Academy because of work.
Their boss was a man with a too high position in the government who had been more than glad to give them money in exchange for information. He was pretty aware of the girls inheriting their mother’s contact network, and he was no idiot. Some people were better to have on your side than against you.
He had asked them to get into the Academy and check on the authorities. He was suspicious about the Acting Director, of course. He was far too young, far too smart, and far too dangerous.
He probably wasn’t expecting what they would find, but that was besides the point.
Of course they signed up as partners. It was rare for twins to have different natures, usually both were channelers or both were shapers, so the Academy took them in without objection. It made sense, however, since they were fraternal twins, and not identical.
They didn’t mind going trough a few tests for science, however, if anything Alyssa was really eager. Aileen found her sister’s hobbies just a tiny bit creepy sometimes, and the idea of going trough those tests a little scary, but in the end she agreed as well.
Aileen was the social type, and before they knew it, she had friends everywhere. Alyssa was okay with knowing everyone and nobody knowing her.
They were comfortable. Almost happy there.
Aileen met Kana at the beginning of the second year. Being the nice twin, it was rare for her to get into trouble, but she sometimes asked a little too much, and she ended up catching the wrong type of attention. It was sometimes really easy to forget that there were other spies in the school as well. Whatever was their Director doing anyway?
Kana was pretty impressive, with her asskicking abilities. At least Aileen had never seen a fourteen year old girl punch a grown man trough a wall, so she was impressed, but then again, most of the mages she had seen had been the soldiers that murdered her parents, so it wasn't a good comparison point.
Kana had smiled, asker her if she was fine.
Had her rescuer been a boy, Aileen would’ve immediately asked him for marriage. Sadly, it was a girl and she didn’t swing that way (not that she was aware of) and she settled for ‘new best friend forever’. It’s needless to say that Kana wasn’t exactly prepared to have a new best friend forever, or any best friend forever at all for that matter.
Still, Aileen was the kind of girl that liked being around people. And cool people were right up her alley. And eventually Kana got used to it. To having a friend to hang around, and to chat with.
At first Alyssa had been more than a little horrified about her sister’s new friend, mostly because this girl had grown living around the Acting Director, and there was a big chance that she was one of the school’s methods of weeding out spies.
She was pretty wrong, as she would eventually find out. That girl was probably as lost as any standard student. Then again, the Acting Director seemed to have the cleanest slate to ever exist.
If he was doing anything, anything, against the country, or for his personal interest, he was absolutely quiet about it. Alyssa wasn’t exactly comfortable with watching an authority figure be actually decent and do their work, as it only made that wrong feeling in her gut become stronger.
But even then, even with all of Aileen’s friends, and Alyssa’s strange hobbies, and them taking different paths sometimes, they were always sisters. Two halves of one thing, to the point of almost reading each other’s thoughts.
The twins, one doing what the other couldn’t.
The twins, completing each other, the perfect team.
The twins, who always kept their eyes and ears open.
The twins.
Never one or the other. Always ‘them’.

Notes:
Yeeeep.
Nothing suspicious here either.
