YYYYY CHAU
Chapter Twelve
Kind words
As she sat in front of the camera, Celine wasn't that sure about what she had said before. She also wasn't sure about letting Imriel comb her hair, but at least she had managed to convince the people there about not following up with the whole makeup thing.
"Miss Celine, you have fifteen minutes until we start." Imriel smiled as he made the finishing touches on Celine's hair. "We have arranged for the transmission to go over to all the channels. It will run with fifteen seconds of delay. You can ask us to interrupt the transmission anytime."
"I understand."
"Once the small red light over there goes on, you'll be on. If you have any trouble you just need to let me know."
"I will."
"Can I help you with anything else?"
"I'm good, really."
"Good luck then, miss Celine."
"Thank you."
Imriel smiled and moved to outside of the camera's range. The angels and humans working on the broadcast were all pretty chatty, and that helped Celine calm down a bit, but that wouldn't last too long.
The sudden silence indicated the presence of the Mother. Celine looked up to see her, and couldn't help but grow infinitely more nervous. There she was, as white as ever, her bright red eyes fixed on Celine. Had she come all the way here to supervise this?
Forget calming down, Celine was tense now. And so so nervous. And still most definitely not ready... And yet, when the lights went on, and the small red light flickered, she found it in herself to smile.
"G-good afternoon, everyone, and thank you so much for your time." Her smile grew a little more relaxed after the first choked greeting. "First of all, I'll admit that I'm not much of a public speaker. Pretty much the opposite actually, so I'll apologize before any ridiculous things come out of my mouth."
She sighed, then smiled once more.
"If two months back anyone had told me I'd be here today I would've called them a liar. I'm nothing but a normal person, like most of the people watching today. I wake up in the mornings, chat with my family, do my homework and talk to my Counselor when I feel confused. I... I only have a small request to make. I know not everyone will find it interesting, and not everyone will find it in them to fulfill it, but please, those who do, share what you learn from it."
For a moment there was only silence. Celine took a deep breath and continued.
"As everyone knows by now, the Chambers are experiencing some issues. Most of you by now have seen or read about the warnings that were sent out. You were told that strange outbursts of emotion could happen, and that it wasn't recommended to do anything dangerous. We all know that, and I know most of you will try to take care..."
Celine grew quiet for a second. Her eyes went to the few expectators, and out of all of them it was Imriel who smiled at her, before nodding.
"In the last few months I have seen how much pain a broken heart can cause. Both to the owner and to everyone around them, and even to the whole world. And it's not fair. Hearts shouldn't ever have to go trough such an experience. So be kind, and be mindful of others' feelings."
She paused once again, to gather her thoughts before continuing.
"Emotions are a wonderful thing, but they are dangerous as well, and you will find that they can sometimes take us to do something very foolish... So please, be kind to each other. Help one another, try to understand that everyone is going trough the same. This is my request to all of you. Love each other, and once the Chambers are restored, make your own choice. Decide if you wish to experience more emotions, or if you wish to go back to how things were. Nobody will resent either choice, nobody will look down on anyone for choosing how to live. So be kind to others in the same way."
As she finished that last sentence, Celine fell quiet. The time was here, wasn't it? The time to make her crazy bet.
"And after all of that..." She stood from her chair, before bowing down. "As someone who was involved in this, I want to ask forgiveness. I understand if you don't find it in your heart to forgive a child so foolish, but I sincerely believed I was doing good. And who knows, maybe I am... But I still want to apologize for making a choice that wasn't only mine to make."
Now there were a few gasps from the people in the room. Some didn't know what to do, and were looking from one to the other in confusion.
"In the same way, I ask that you forgive anyone involved. I know I'm not in the right to ask such a thing, but it's still important that you do. And that you please, please, work hard to keep the peace that the Mother worked so hard to attain."
Finally, Celine walked back to the chair.
"Kindness and forgiveness go hand in hand. We may make mistakes, we all do, but it's important that we learn from them, and we learn much faster when there is someone at our side that feels proud of our effort. Thank you so much."
It had been fifteen minutes and Celine was sitting very still in the chair. Imriel had urged the people in the studio to go on with their duties, so it was just him and the Mother a few steps back.
"Miss Celine, are you well?" Imriel's voice was concerned, but Celine nodded.
"Yes, just tired."
"I'll get you a glass of water." He smiled, quickly making his way out. That only made the Mother's presence even more notorious, and awkward.
"You took all the blame for yourself." The Mother's voice was cold, and Celine wondered if she was angry.
"Yes. Having someone to place the blame on will help the people while the Chambers are enabled again."
"And you think that is a good idea?"
"It does takes Nanael out of the equation. Only the ones involved know that she was behind all of this. And since people will be busy being angry at me, they won't ask for more information."
"Is that your 'kindness'? Taking all the responsibility for something you didn't do alone in order to calm their anger? Waiting to see how many of them are truly willing to forgive you for that supposed sin?" The Mother's tone got a few degrees colder with that last sentence.
"No, ma'am." Celine smiled, finally standing. Not that standing helped, with the Mother being so tall, but it made her feel a little less tiny. "They know love and forgiveness. I may not agree with the method, but I know you have shown it to them."
"And so?"
"I'll believe that they won't hurt me. Maybe one, maybe two... But not all of them. Some will even defend me, or maybe want to know my story and why I did what I did. And it won't be some treatment that will take them to do that. It will be their hearts."
"I see."
"I will place my trust in them. I will hope for the best. That is my 'kindness'."
"I've lived for a long time, child. In that time I've seen kindness and hope kill more than one dreamer. I've seen them used as weapons against them... And not once the world changed for the best. It only came to be worse and worse... So forgive me if I'm not willing to believe in your words, as nice as they are."
"I understand. It's not easy." Celine nodded, and the Mother smiled. A scary, bitter smile.
"You will become a martyr, or you will be forgotten, Celine. And the world won't change, not even a little. When that day comes, my door will be open in case of you wanting to play Adversary a little more."
With no further word, the Mother turned around and left. Celine watched her walk away without a word. She didn't have anything else to say, after all.
She would do her best to make a change in the good way. She would do her best to show the Mother that a kinder world was possible. That everyone could change for good if they wanted to.
Even if she had to dedicate her life to that.
She was ready now.
Epilogue
Sunset
The water was getting to her feet, and Celine wondered if standing and moving a little further from the water wouldn't be better.
She didn't really mind getting a bit wet, but it wasn't that much of a good idea when it was about to get dark.
"How long has it been?" She asked instead.
"A year and thirty seven days." Elimiel answered.
"She was right, I guess..."
"We all are forgotten, Celine. Our world is always moving, and so are people. That is why everyone works hard to leave something behind."
"Do you think people can change, Elimiel?"
"I do. I just haven't found the way."
"Then I guess we just have to keep trying."
"You have a lifetime ahead of you."
For a moment there was only the sound of the waves, and the sight of the sky, getting darker and darker each second.
And then, her voice broke the silence once more.
"Don't worry. I'll make it worth your while."
